How the Pandemic Has Created a Surge in Cosmetic Surgery
The pandemic and lockdowns since March 2020 have changed just about every aspect of life. One interesting development has been the surge in cosmetic surgery, which has been reported in places all over the world, including the UK, US, Japan, Australia and South Korea. So, what has been the reason for this rise in cosmetic surgery?
The Rise of Cosmetic Surgery
There are a few reasons why more people are opting for
cosmetic surgery, but it is thought that people spending a huge amount of time
on video calls and looking at their own face during conversations has made
people a lot more self-conscious. This is certainly understandable when work
meetings and group chats have become such a major part of life in recent times.
Zoom Face
This has become so prevalent that there has actually been a
name associated with this – “Zoom Face”. Zoom Face is the idea of people
becoming hyper-aware of their appearance due to the amount of time spent on
video calls both at work and in our personal lives. This allows people to see
their full range of emotions and bring certain features to light in an often
unflattering manner (usually due to the angle of the screen and lighting).
Other Factors
There are other contributing factors too. Social media is
said to be a major contributor, especially with the popularity of filters that
mean that people are constantly looking at an unrealistic version of “beauty”
and may feel self-conscious. On top of this, the pandemic might have led people
to reflect and decide that they want to take action to feel as good about
themselves as popular.
Common Procedures
It is also interesting to see the kind of procedures that
people are opting for. As you might imagine, Zoom Face has led to a sharp rise
in nose surgery as this is often the feature that people feel the most
self-conscious about. Other common procedures during the pandemic include
facelifts, breast augmentation, tummy tucks and fillers just as a few of the
more common procedures.
It is interesting to see how cosmetic surgery has seen a
sharp rise during the pandemic and it will be interesting to see if this
continues as life slowly returns to normal. Cosmetic surgery can be a great way
for people to improve their appearance and self-confidence, but it is always a
decision that needs to be made with caution and not simply due to Zoom Face and
what people see on social media.
